I'd start with wiring diagrams.

Here's a diagram of your fuse block in the passenger floor board. You'll most likely have to remove the entire panel to gain access to the circuit breaker.

1 25 Amp Power outlet - Located top left column in fuse bank.
2 25 Amp Cigar lighter
3 10 Amp Left headlamp
4 10 Amp Left headlamp
5 10 Amp Right headlamp
6 5 Amp Dash lights (switches, controls, gauge cluster)
7 10 Amp License light & the left side turn, parXXXXX, XXXXXer and tail lamp
8 - - - Spare Fuse
9 10 Amp Compass, sentry key, headlamp delay module, instrument cluster
10 15 Amp Transmission range sensor, duty cycle evap/purge solenoid, radiator fan relay, a/c clutch relay, o2 sensor up/downstream relays, back up lamp switch
11 20 Amp Transmission control module, powertrain control module, automatic shutdown relay, fuel pump relay
12 10 Amp Instrument cluster, combination flasher
13 - - - Spare Fuse
14 10 Amp Power mirrors, rear defogger & switch - Located bottom left column in fuse bank.
15 25 Amp Passenger power lock/window switch - Located top right column in fuse bank.
16 10 Amp Cargo lamp/switch, courtesy lamps, radio, instrument cluster, underhood lamp, transmission control module
17 15 Amp Radio
18 10 Amp Power mirror switch, driver power window/lock switch, heated seats
19 10 Amp Starter motor relay
20 15 Amp Trailer tow harness & trailer turn relays
21 15 Amp Horn(s)
22 20 Amp Rear wiper switch & motor
23 10 Amp Right side marker, turn, parking and tail lights
24 - - - Spare Fuse
25 15 Amp Shift lock solenoid, a/c heater control, abs controller, abs controller relay, blower motor relay, blend door actuator
26 10 Amp Airbag control module
27 10 Amp Airbag control module -Located bottom right column in fuse bank.
28 25 Amp Driver & Passenger side power door locks & power windows
29 25 Amp Power & heated seats
30 20 Amp Front wiper & washer

Spot 30 has a 20a circuit breaker. You'll want to check and see if it has tripped. If it has, replace it and they should work.

Then report back.

Sometimes a simple fuse can be the answer.

Hey lowrange2.
This is a great fuse block diagram. What years does it cover?
Good post no matter what.

2000 XJ

Tell you what, I'll fill in where the original poster left off...

Same problem. Wipers worked yesterday, now they don't! Although I believe by coincidence my rear wiper has stopped also. Thought maybe it was just gunk and/or rust because over the last few days when it's on it would stutter at the apex on the starting and returning cycle.

May need help diagnosing that, but first I'll check the fuses on the front and report back.

some development. haven't had time to mess with it due to illness but the last two days driving to work, wipers do not work in the morning but do work in afternoon. 12 min drive to work... it's been between 20 & 30 degrees here. made sure any snow or ice was cleared off blades and made sure they'd be capable of free movement before running so as not to stress motor. is the cold wx screwing with the motor or motor just going bad? Day 3 tomorrow...

happened again this morning. everything works except the front wipers what seems to be in the morning. even after my engine got up to full temp... nothing. I'll go check it on my first break in about a hour. at this point can I rule out fuses?

So 630 this morning they wouldn't work. But now 830 and they're fine. I should point out at 630 there was no resemblance of movement at all. just completely dead. seems like its time to start addressing the motor?

It's been between 20 and 30 F overnight the last few days. Whenever there is any hint of snow I make sure to lift the wiper arms and jostle them around a bit to make sure they aren't frozen to the windshield. I've made that mistake once before... Will check the fuse today...

no i mean where the motor and where it plugs in... there could be a lot of stuff in the cowl where the motor sits... maybe even water... Sorry I was not more clear on that...

So, I've semi decided to replace the wiper motor. I took the cowling off and was actually surprised at how clean it was in and around the motor. No sign of water or any debris.

Checked an O'Reilly's and Autozone, they're both around $60 for a motor. Checked a junkyard and they've got one for $35 but they confused me by asking me if it was left hand side or right hand side. ??? There's only one motor. Right?
