i think 8000 would be the smallest id choose to use. remeber your not just towing the vehicle, your pulling the weight of what your hung up on, mud, tree trucnks, whatever it is.

Also thats the pulling power on the last winding on the drum and most of the time your not at that. More pulling power is always nice if you have the cash

These Jeeps are light; you'd get by just fine with a 6K lb winch.
Look on ebay, and type in Mile Marker. There's this company that sells a 8K lb Mile Marker for 390.00- and free shipping. That's pretty damn good right there. Northern Tool and Equipment also sells a 8K lb Superwinch for 400.00, but you'd have to pay tax on that. (unless you live in OR)

Smittybuilt is also in the winch business now, but I think it's re-branded cheap China made quality. They're not a winch company; they're simply putting their name on something else. 4 wheel parts sells a Smittybuilt 8K lb winch for 300.00. You couldn't find a used one for that much.

Milemarker Man I abused my 9k MM winch for 3 years, every weekend, getting stuck in mud. That thing went through two motors but it kept on pulling. I recommend twice the vehicle weight when choose a winch. 8k or more would suit a cherokee. 6k would do but you'd need to double-line it.

When i get my detour's bumper, i'll be sure a MM winch is sitting on it

Here's my ex well-used winch:

Look at Harbor Freight. They sell a 8000 for $370 and a 10000 for $400. They are a Mile marker with a different name.

I got my 8000lb Champion winch from Tractor Supply. The idea is to get a winch that is 2/3 times bigger than the weight of your vehicle to help make up for the obstacle your trying to over come. Something between a 8000 and a 9500 is idle for a XJ. Anything more is overkill and if you ever used it at full potential would destroy your frame.

The nice thing about the Champion winch is that it comes with a ****** block and a mounting plate.

Sam's Club also sells the Champion for roughly 400.00, but what if you have a problem like Muddeprived had...and you need a new motor for it? How serviceable is it? Where are the parts found, and at what cost?

My friend has a Chicago (Harbor Freight) 8K lb winch, and loves it. He too, calls it a Mile Marker re-branded. He comments about slow line speed retreival. If he burns up anything on that winch, I can guarentee that China Freight will tell him that he's screwed; and to buy another. If I spend that kind of money on a piece of equipment that can be kept for years to come, I want something that is serviceable. Brand name.

One of these days, I'll post a write up on a Koenig King PTO winch that I got, and am currently overhauling for my Bronco. PTO winch... Put the T-case in neutral, engage the PTO box, and your transmission decides how fast the line speed retreival is. I can't wait to bust that out on the trail; everyone will be like: WTF; that thing is bad ***!

The idea in buying a winch is to double the weight of your rig.so in the case of a cherokee that weighs roughly 3154lbs,you would want a 6000 lb at the very least.i going to go with 8000 after considering gear passengers ect.im getting a smittybuilt8000. A buddy of mine has had one for over a year now and loves it and uses it a lot.he said its a little slow, but you cant beat it for the price.hope that helps

harbor freight actually has a warranty you can buy for like 5 bucks that is really good, 2 years no questions asked replacement or repair. I got it for a drill press I picked up.

The rule of thumb for winches is it should be rated at 2X the fully loaded weight of the rig it is one. That being said, my XJ fully gassed and loaded for a 4wheeling trip is around 3700 lbs. So, I went with an 8K winch. Smittybuilt XRC8000 winches are still available at a couple of places for $300. I haven't seen any name brand winch that can beat that price on an 8K. The line speed is a little slow but, I'm not an IROC so it works fine for me. Hope this helps.
