Default Will Not Start

One simple problem is leading to catastrophe for my 91’ XJ (AX15, 4.0, 4X4).

Took the XJ to a mechanic to fix a couple of problems. One was to remove the transmission and check out a loud noise. $850, three days later, and a bladder in the top of the clutch master cylinder that magically disappeared, no clutch. Air in the hydraulic line. Dealt with that for a while (long drawn out story, I know for a fact that the bladder was missing, but i didn’t realize it until it was too late).

Tried to start it today, couldn’t get it out of gear. XJ was lurching as I cranked the engine (just trying to get it to a mechanic that I know and trust).

Got it out of gear. But now it will not start at all. I can smell fuel for sure.

The only problem that I had before going to the $850 mechanic was a vibe @ 35 Mph and a loud whining noise out of the new transmission. Clutch worked 100% fine and the engine started without any problems.

Did I damage something trying to start it while it was in gear?

Possibly. Start with the basics: Do you have spark? Do you have fuel? Where is that fuel leak?

Nothing would be damaged from cranking while in gear besides extra load on your starter. You may just have a CPS crapped out coincidentally. If you smell fuel you may have no spark?

probably not, but sounds like you got NO clutch ?

if so, it wont be driveable

over my years of mucking around with old cars, sometimes its better to just get flatbed, (depends on distance of course)

had a quote on that ?

(assuming you cannot or dont want to attend to the various issues at your own hand)

That clutch master/slave assembly is on the easy side to replace. When I had a shop do mine, I about kicked myself for not doing it myself.

Replacing it today. Gathered all the parts to move the slave to the outside of the bell housing.

Let it sit yesterday to dry out if it is flooded.

What is the next step if the CPS craps out?

Test it. If bad, replace it.

The only residual is that the Jeep is randomly revving high... and It’s tough getting the Jeep into fourth gear. 😡

The advance adapters conversion kit is solid!!
