Not with out converting it to leaf springs or the XJ to coils.

find a 8.8 from a explorer. 31 spline, tons of after market support, weld on new spring mounts, has disc's. dime a dozen!

Sounds straightforward.. how does the 8.8 compare to the d44 in strength and durability? Also what years explorers will fit?

8.8 is real close to the 44 in strength but it has c-clips and hangs a little bit lower. Find one with disc brakes and the c-clips aren't as big of an issue. Also it's 2" narrower than a stock xj axle so you might need spacers if you don't have enough offset on your wheels.

V6 is the same as V8 some JYs charge less for the V6 axles but the V8 more liklely to have LSD. But if it doesnt you can always upgrade to a locker.
