Default Will 2004 WJ 4.0 head fit 2001 XJ ?

So, I've come to the conclusion that I either have a bad head gasket or a cracked head.

Since my rockers and pivots are pretty worn anyway AND if my non-TUPY 0331 head isn't cracked it may always threaten, I figure a decent used head at a good price would be a smart thing to put on as long as I had it apart to check gasket anyway.

My understanding is Jeep wrangler 4.0 from 2002-2007 with TUPY markings is good as well as Grand Cherokee 4.0 from 2002-2005 with TUPY markings.

Is this correct?

I've been reading up on this also as I have a 01. I'm at 162k and hope it does strike me but not sure if mine is a TUPY or not. Is TUPY 0331 good or non-TUPY 0331? Or neither??

In the 0331 casting is good to have the TUPY. From what I understand unless your head has already been replaced, the 2000 and 2001 cherokees will not have that TUPY designation. I believe you would have an NH1 instead. (NH1 = Need Head 1, rather Yoda geek speak for one that needs new head)

Is TUPY visible from the oil fill cap or is that not between the 3-4 cylinders?

Unfortunate not, you would have to remove the valve cover to see it.

Well, I was wrong above. With the 2000/2001 head there is nothing to see between cylinders 3 and 4 (under oil fill cap) the TUPY however DOES show up between cylinders 3 and 4.

Alright. I picked up a felpro VC gasket to swap when I do my oil change just waiting for it to get warmer. I've only had the jeep a few months and just stumbled on this head issue. I will be keeping an eye on my coolant level and pray I'm not a victim.

Well, you ARE going to see the NH1 stamp unless your head has already been replaced. Not necessarily a bad thing, there are people on here running those and have not experienced a crack, your odds just get worse.

If you aren't loosing coolant...no worries.

Also, I assume I will want to take the new(used) head to a machine shop prior to mounting it...? If so what do I ask for that sounds more intelligent than "make it flat" and how much $$ should that run me?

The NH1 stamp will be between #5 and #6 intake valve springs on top of head, under valve cover. A 2002 thru 2006 TUPY head will be a complete match for you 2001. A complete direct bolt-in replacement.
