Why replace U-bolts???

My rear axle u-bolts are not rusty...not even a little. All they have is a coat of oil and dirt (California vehicle). Why does everyone say to replace them when doing springs?
It's not like they are going to spontaneously fail right now...why would taking them off and putting them back on cause any concern? Are they stretched when torqued?

the bolts get stretched when torqued down yes. they are not grade 8 in most cases. since they are not grade 8 it weakens them even more when re torqued.
you can special order grade 8 u-bolts tho. plus replacing them is a cheap peace of mind. i mean they are only $22 for al 4
