Why aren't vehicles made of stainless steel?

I wonder this because it would certainly help a lot with rust, especially for off road vehicles. Is it because it tends to be hard to work with?

Yeah I knew the Delorian was. Just wasn't sure if any others were. Can you imagine how much longer a lot of our vehicles would last if made of stainless?

Is stainless really that much more expensive? I really have no idea.

And it would be very heavy.

P.S.: The Delorian was slooowwww because of the weight (0-60 in 10.5 sec.)

stainless steel is both heavier and more expensive to work with than regular steel, as long as regular steel is coated well it won't oxidize for quite sometime, even the newest xj's in the US are still ten years old....

Could you use a thinner gauge stainless vs the sheet metal now used to balance the weight and strength?

I didn't realize SS was significantly heavier than plain 'ole sheetmetal, but now that I think about it I guess it is.

My '92 XJ only has a couple of very minor rust spots. I'm very pleased in this regard as I'm paranoid about rust.

if you keep an eye on your rust spots and treat them you wont have any problems what so ever, unless you drive on salted roads then you need to wash the underbelly every so often and get it treated.

What, do you spray the underside with motor oil?

It is much heavier. It is not much stronger. And, given the correct circumstances ie. 304 stainless used in a cat back exhaust system, stainless can rust very readily. Excessive heat drives the nickel out of the alloy and presto, regular, rusty steel.

I have converted the exhaust systems on my cherokee's to stainless. Any parts i make for them I use stainless if I can. My one cherokee has a stainless hitch. I have made battery trays out of stainless. I have also made front license plate holders out of stainless. I used stainless to fix the rusty floors on my son's 92. I used 3m undercoating on my cherokees.
