i get a whining that changes in pitch with acceleration in the front while in 4x4, is this normal? strange thing is, when im in 2x4 my back seems to lock when brakeing and then lets go abrublty when letting off the brake and returning to gas, doesnt do that in 4x4... any ideas?

whine in 4wd is common.
don't know about your braking clunk tho. you may need new rear brakes.
you may have a sloppy rear driveshaft u-joint.

I had a leaking wheel cylinder that gunked up everything and the pads would hang after letting off the brake. Check out both your rear drums. Do the rear tires actually skid when braking? If so 4x4 could keep them spinning. Gas mileage shouldn't change a whole lot in 4x4 since the front drivetrain still spins in 2x4 if you don't have unlockable front hubs.
caged,
Is whine in 4wd a common problem or normal operation? Mine makes some extra noise too.
