Default Need Cylinder Head for a 93 Cherokee

So the water pump went out and my wife kept driving it. It will start but runs VERY rough. A mechanic friend says the head is cracked since there is oil in the Anti-Freeze.

Does anyone know where I can get a head for this year? Is it better just to overhaul the whole thing while I am at it. It has about 120K on it.

I also have a 95 in 2x4 but that's the wifes new commuter.

Thanks in advance.

That doesn't necessarily mean the head is cracked. You could have a blown head gasket.

well, if it helps; I have a head to a 96 4.0, but it needs reworked by a machine shop. I rebuilt a motor for my xj and I had the other head left over. I haven't really taken a look at it since I had it out over 4 months ago, so I cant guarantee the condition of it; but its your's to have if you pay for shipping. Also, I agree that it could be just a head gasket if your oil looked milky white. Try changing the head gasket (apprx $23), and see what it does

Good point. How do I check to see if it is the gasket or the head?

Thanks

You'll have to pull the head to check for any damage to it, unless there is visible damage on the outside. If the head gasket is blown you'll likely see the damaged gasket when the head comes off. If it were mine, I'd have the head checked for warping and have the block decked either way. Unless you enjoy replacing head gaskets on a regular basis.

In another thread they were saying that the head can be cracked and that magnafulxing won't always pick it up. I figured I would just get one from RockAutoParts.com and replace the head and associated gaskets.

Are you referring to the deck on the block that the head will be placed on? That would require pulling the engine for sure.

Link to the other thread I was talking about.

I would try just doing the head gasket first. The head on a 4.0 is very hard to crack. I've overheated mine atleast 15-20 times to 250-260 degrees(all on accident of course) and I don't have a cracked head.

There is a guy on the Detroit area craigslist with a brand re-new head for $225. Has receipts, looks legit. I don't know the guy, just thought you might want to know about it. I stumbled across it looking for wheels.

Has yours ever stopped running from being overheated? Mine will run but it is extremely choppy and sounds like it wants to die.

Thanks man. While I was in Iraq I know of three people in my company that got screwed on Craigs list. I will stay away unless I can personally see the thing I am buying when I hand over the cash.

Thanks for the heads up tho.

Yeah actually it has. I had to let it cool off for about 2 hours and then I started it again and it ran like ****, so I pulled it into the garage and did a head gasket job on it and it runs perfectly fine and has been for the last 5 months

Jeez, now you got me thinking about just doing the head gasket.
