If I'm not mistaken the ecu on our jeeps is refered to as the pcm which is located on the inside of the drivers side fender. Prolly wanna wait for someone else but I think that's correct

The ecu or mcu or pcm... or whatever else it may be called depending on the source... is located under the dash on the right side of the steering column in the '88 Cherokee.

Thanks for the input guys buuut I am going a little different direction.. I found a gated floor shifter by rad designs that allows you to bypass the electrical tcu. It makes it so u manually shift gears 1-4 and is simple to install. And at 180 bucks I think its a bargain! And I won't have the headache of all the wiring.. and for off roading having the option to hold it in 1st... I will keep u all updated on that
