Default Wheel Noises...

Just last week I noticed a hum coming from the front passenger side wheel. I thought it was a wheel bearing but it wasn't a constant hum. Then it ended and yesterday I noticed a clicking noise coming from the same area. So, today I went out and pushed on the top of the tire and was able to replicate the clicking noise. I'm not 100% sure where all the bearings are located within the hub assembly and before I go and rip everything apart I want to turn to all you jeep guys for some help. Let me know if you have experienced the same situation or even have an idea that could point to or away from the hub assembly.

Thanks,
Adam

the hub is a one pc assembly it can be replaced at home but you need some muscle and big socket and hammer

I'm about to do a uni-hub on mine this weekend. What are the "right tools"??

For that matter, what should I be prepared for? I'm thinking this to be a one hour job per side. Is that not a fair estimate?

The first thing that comes to mind with it being the passenger side, is the CV joint. If it is the wheel bearing you will need a hub puller and prbably an impact wrench to get the hub off.

might be the ball joints too...

jack up that side and try and shake the wheel; fine the play then come back.

some swivel IMPACT sockets make it go a lot faster. Good ones. like these http://www.tooltopia.com/sk-hand-tool-34328.aspx?utm_source=pricegrabber&utm_medium=cse& utm_term=SKT34328&utm_campaign=pricegrabber_r1

other than that basic stuff

I've never used a hub puller.

A bad wheel bearing doesn't always have play.

Never said it does. But investigating the problem with the weight off the wheel in question could only help.

I did my ball joints last weekend (which require going a bit further than you are) in a little over 5 hours for both sides. I would say 1-1.5 hours per side is a good estimate.

You need a 36mm 6pt socket for the hub nut. Pull the wheels off, unbolt the brake calipers (13mm), hang them somewhere. Then take the cotter pin out of the hub nut, remove the dust shield, slap that big 36mm socket onto your break bar/impact gun and hope you can break it lose. Then you need a 12pt 13mm socket or wrench (6pt won't work here, it will round off the bolts then you're stuck) to remove the hub bolts. Once those are off, I just tapped around the backside while spinning the wheel and it eventually worked lose.

On reassembly, I put antisieze on the face of the hub and the knuckle where it mates up, to make sure next time it is not so stuck together.

If your gonna do this i recommend soaking the hub nut with pb, awhile back i did both front hubs and it wasnt until i had tried to get the nut loose for like an hour that i finally got it to break loose on the first hub. Soak it good the day before you do the work, then the day off go out and spray it again, if you can just leave the center cap out of your rim and spray it. then lock it in 4wd and with the wheel on and it sitting on the ground with a good length cheater bar or a impact break it loose the PB made the second one only take about an houre total whereas the first took nearly 4.5 hours to do, its not hard to do at all just a little labor intensive. ald the stat bols that hold the hub on will need a healthy dose of pb too probably and possible replacement 2 out of the 6 bolts had to be replace on mine as after breaking them loose they where to rounded over to reuse. hope this helps a little.

True, but the constant hum wouldn't be a tie rod or ball joint etc.

Well I finally pulled the wheel off as well as the caliper and rotor and the bearings are completely shot. I can take the end of the hub with the studs and move it up and down almost a half an inch. Sense money is so tight at the moment, the junkyard hub will have to do until I can make it home from school for christmas and finally get a new replacement. I hate having to make due but right now I have no choice. Thanks for all the help guys.
