2001 Sport, aw4, dead stock, tires included and no lift, with roughly 42,000 miles, last tank was 23.5 mpg (US converted as I am Canadian and know about our larger Imperial gallons). Now the mileage mix was 80% highway at about 60 mph on cruise control but half of that was pulling a God awful 5X9 U-haul trailer with a giant double pig roast on it.
I wouldn’t say that I drive like an old guy even if each day I am becoming one but I don’t find the Cherokee to lend itself to going 90 and being flung through the corners or slid around them. I am happy sitting just under what our police officers will allow on cruise, this works out being a very efficient, if anything on a Jeep can be called efficient, speed.
I use full synthetic oil, check my tire pressure and air filter, stock, regularly checked.

'91 XJ, 4.0, 3", 31's, 3.55's, K & N oem airfilter and Thrush glasspack. I am averaging just a hair over 15 mpg right now running a daily newspaper route with a lot of stop-n-go and a bunch of hills.

1989 Cherokee base
4.0 with bosch injectors
Goodyear Wrangler Authority 31x10.50r15
Stock gears with almost 200000 miles on the Jeep
13-16 Mixed driving city/highway/offroad
I got 19.4mpg this week (mixed driving and none offraod) and that with a heavy foot at times lol. Im quite impressed to say the least. When I put the new injectors in I got 13-15mpg but now its crazy how much Im getting. Granted this is a rough estemate from the miles I have driven and the amount of gas I have used from where the fuel gage is sitting at so not the most accurate but probly not that far off either.

I just dont like people spewing false information, especially about hypermilling cause i live in the land of the hippies and i have to deal with dummys all the time. It makes me want to buy a huge diesel and drive around town revving and blowing black smoke.
The next time someone says they are being green by driving a prius, laugh in their face. Ask them where does the heavy metals come from, where are the batteries made, and where do the batteries end up? answer: canada, japan, landfill
I have a 1991 cherokee. It has 334xxx miles and 30x9.50 BFG'S. I rebuilt the motor complete about 30k back. Had it bored 30 over. Everything else is stock. I did add an AIR RAID throttle body spacer, and I run a bottle of basic berrymans and a bottle of gumout octane booster every fill up. Currently getting 22-25 mpg each week. Much depends on traffic. My highest was 27 and low was 20. my average runs 22.5. Tranny is a stock ax-5 standard. At every oil change I add 1 quart of lucas oil stabilizer and 1/2 quart duralube. The oil filter is over sized which gives better oil cleaning and more oil to the engine. Total oil capacity is 6.5 quarts. Thats what I have and do. Good wheeling!

2 company vehiclee--both exactly the same specification--BONE stock, 4.0 liter 6 cyl auto Command Trac. nearly 100% street driven same fuel choices, same commute--60 miles a day about 55 miles at 60/70 mph and the balance city driving.
1) 1999 14.5 mpg
2) 2001 18.0 mpg
That's a 25% improvement.
I see the 2001 has no distributor, but what other changes account for the huge difference?

I suppose you're going to mention that it's a 4 cylinder now.
Completely stock '99 4wd 4.0L. Took it on a 400 mile trip couple weekends ago and averaged 24mpg. Average mpg with 25% city 75% hwy 19-20mpg.
+1 on granny driving and 65mph cruise control.
