its a winch located in the rear of a vehichle that sucks the rear of the truck down towards the axle. the cable end is hooked to a point on the axle so when the winch is ran in, the rear of the truck squats down. can help in certain off road situations but mostly seen on big buggies.

Here is an example of how it is hooked up. They can be on the front or the rear.

it brings the ride height down for a better cog and less weight distribution when in off camber situations or steep hillclimbing

Helps with steep descents and assents to decrease the likelihood of a roll over. No, they aren't used in mudding, primarily rock crawling. There are situations that I've been in, that I'd definitely have used one!!

Not much of a need unless you have a dedicated rock crawler in most circumstances.

Yeah, I went down a steep rock face and the rear wheels came off the ground. It was prolly A LOT farther from rolling than it felt, but a good "pucker" factor nonetheless!! Then going up the same obstacle the front end will get pretty light. More of a mind game than anything else, I think!!

Or a rock racer where time counts..

Would rather hook up a winch to keep me from flipping over, than using it to suck down the front end.
