Sorry I kno theres probably another thread but I looked quickly and couldnt find what I was looking for. I have a 96 xj and long story short I wanna pull the axle out thats in it and swap a new one in. My buddy has an 83 xj with a d30 up front and I was wondering if they are a direct bolt in replacement for my 96? Or is anything different? Sorry I dont kno much about the renix years, thanks in advance for any help.

There was no 1983 model year XJ.
Renix D30s will fit fine. You just have to figure out some way to bypass the vacuum disconnect. Either lock it permanently or use the shafts from your 96

Gear ratios have to match, and the Renix Jeeps have the disconnect front axle, which is easy to bypass.
As far as bolting in, any axle out of any year XJ will bolt into any other XJ. And any TJ or MJ front axle will bolt into an XJ, but not the rears unless you put some work into it. Biggest thing I recommend when swapping front axles, is avoid TJ and 00-01 XJ D30s, since they are a low pinion axle.

What all does doing the bypass involve? As of now my plans are to hopefully get it in the garage this weekend, still not sure whether im gonna do the whole swap cuz i really only need to cut off whats left of my lca brackets and weld the new hd ones on and put on a new set of upper control arms. I cant get my buddies grandpa to come down on price, he wants 850 for the whole xj an its got a broken pinion and yolk and no floors left at all and over 200k on the clock and its just not worth it so im gonna try my luck with what I got.

Also whats the quickest way to find out what the gear ratios are, is it on the door tag? Id look but my jeep is 30 miles away and has been for 2 months now because apparently its a crime for garages around here to do anything besides an oil change or alignment 😑

It's really easy to figure out your gear ratio and all you need is a couple of jackstands and a piece of chalk. Jack up the rear axle and secure it on Jackstands. Put your transfer case in N. put a chalk mark on one of the U-joint caps on your rear u-joint on the rear driveshaft. Then draw a chalk line on the inside of one of your rear tires from the rim out to the tread. Now, just turn your driveshaft by hand until the tire makes one full turn. You gear ratio is determined by the number of turns of the driveshaft it takes for 1 turn of the tire. 3 and a half turns to 1 = 3.55 gears. 4 turns to 1 = 4.10 gears, etc

Watch this video. It walks you through bypassing the entire thing. Part two is the second link.

As far as ratios go: 4.0 with an auto, odds are its got 3.55s. 4.0 5 speed, probably got 3.07s. As far as i understand, most 4 bangers came with 4.10s. Your 96 wont have a disconnect front axle. Anything late '91 (my '91, 11/90 production had a disconnect housing) on up will use a non disconnect. Honestly, for how cheap dana 30s are, your better off finding a non disconnect than to mess around with converting a disco to non disco.
