What transfer case to get??
What transfer cases will bolt up to a 98 XJ 5 spd 2wd trans?
What donor years have these?
Can I use a trans case from and auto trans if I get the manual adapter from an 86 2.8 w/5spd?
Will anything "grand' cherokee fit and work well?
I am having issues finding what I want here so I figure I'll keep doing the parts and cost analysis until I find what I want or build it myself. My only real issue is I can't do engines(no shop for hoisting and no hoist anymore).
I have done enough reading to get a donor for the axles and get both axles. Everything else axle and driveline wise seems cut and dry. Just gott figure out the transcase issue and I might have myself talked into it. I have looked all over and can't find any bolt pattern tech for the above mentioned parts.
Any help is appreciated

as long as you find one with similar axles, C8.25/d30 (which you should have with a 98) if there is one at a JY go for it!

no transfer case will "bolt-on" to a 2wd trans. you will either have to get a 4x4 transmission or get the parts to convert yours. the conversion requires a full rebuild.
as for which transfer case you need will depend on what you do with your jeep. the 231 is part-time only case and is used only off road. the 242 has a full-time position which has a diff in the transfer case to allow using 4hi on pavement. you can lock the case in part-time 4hi which bypasses the diff and is only for off road. the 249 case is a full-time 4hi case which is more of an all-wheel drive setup with no 2hi position. tell us what you plan to do with your cherokee and we can recommend which case to go with.

I plan on using it as a DD and wheelin on the beaches, in the mud, and where ever I may find a few rocky roads here in Tx. Not sure if that's possible. I am figuring on keeping it for about 4 more years. That should give me enough time to get back to the great northwest and finish my 63 scout. At which time the XJ will go away and be replaced by a 3/4 ton P/U for towing the scout around.

depending on the beaches, mud and rocky roads you plan to hit, you may only need to put a limited slip or a locker in the rear. being able to put traction down through both wheels will make your jeep much more capable than you think. the tire you use can make a difference as well. you might consider getting an aggressive all terrain tire to help with traction. taking a buddy along is always a good idea. just make sure he brings his own jeep so you can help each other should one of you get stuck.
