98 XJ Auto 157xxx miles

This is the sport model, it came with power door locks.

For some reason the drivers door locks every time I get out (even if I leave the keys in the ignition).

None of the rest of the doors lock by themselves, and otherwise the power door locks work fine.

This is fine right now because the windows are usually down, but will be a hassle in the winter.

Any ideas on a cause?

Probably a short somewhere in the harness at or close to the hinge point. When does it lock? When it is just a little bit open, or all the way? Try opening it just a smidge, lock it, and see if it does anything when you swing it open fully. Good luck.
