No clue what it is, or what system it is tied to, I just know it ticks loudly and never used to. The speed of the ticks changes with engine speed. Its in the rear of the engine compartment just below where the factory hood lamp is attached to the underside of the hood. My finger is placed on the part in question.

Thanks guys!

Evaporative Purge Solenoid. It's supposed to tick. It's part of the emissions control system. It controls the quantity and rate of fuel vapor released from the charcoal canister and into the intake manifold.

The ticking can vary in frequency and loudness due to the changing rate of purge. I've noticed that in my '97 neon, '96 cherokee, and '99 cherokee.

Yeah, I found mine yesterday too. It was loud and I almost thought I had a rod starting to knock. I guess I never paid much attention to it before, but upon investigation found this....you can feel it ticking too. It was a big relief. I love that little thing.

No, that's aftermarket. A guy named Emmit_brown sells various versions on Ebay, apparently they start ticking like that if the plutonium in them gets low. No wonder you haven't been able to time travel.

If you change it you are supposed to change it and the flux capacitor out together. You are in luck as AutoZone is having a sale on the pair during this week.

This has me thinkin' (dangerous...) If this solenoid isn't working, would it cause a pressure buildup that would make it very difficult to fill the gas tank? Last week I started having very quick cutoffs of the gas pump at two different stations, and I knew it had something to do with the charcoal canister (or its control).

Thoughts? Suggestions?

No, no connection to filling issues. If the Purge Valve isn't working you will get a code. P-0440 most likely but others are possible.

You may need a new charcoal canister. Have you overfilled or have a habit of "topping off" when you fill up? I'm pretty sure they can't be cleaned out. My previous ride (an Audi A4) had this problem. Huge pain to fill up.
