Isn't a shift motor for electronic 4wd engagement? The push button or dash switch style? What manual are you reading?
This shouldn't have anything to do with an XJ...

Haynes. It says it's connected to both the Command-track front axle and the Selec-trac front axle. Only needs to be removed when removing the passenger side axle shaft.

Ahh.. Idk, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say no, they don't. I've never seen anything other than a vent line coming off a d30/35. The yoke is fixed, so even if you remove the front DS (which has nothing to do with removing the axle shafts...) the yoke stays in place.
Remove wheel, break assembly, unbolt hub and remove shaft.. Right?

Also- why are you removing shafts?

Need to replace the bearing/hub assemblies. So I figure why not remove the axle shafts to inspect, grease, and to learn how to R&R the axle shafts while it's mostly apart.

take caution when sliding the shafts back in. if you drag them in on the bottom of the tube, you can damage the inner seal resulting is constant axle leak and they're a pita to change.

i will keep them lifted up off the bottom and carefully slip them through the seal.

the seals are on the end of the tube inside the pumpkin.

Cool. Thanks for the 411. I'll keep that in mind.
