No idea what this part is..I cannot find it in the service manual either.
I have 89 XJ with a Straight 6. My new project, trying to replace some of the broken parts... but no clue what this thing does...
the only thing I could think of is putting some kinda charge into the body to prevent rusting..
its a shot in the dark... but... can someone help me out?

hmm I'll have to check... my XJ starts up in 1-2 cranks. Not really a hard time starting.. it idles really high though, around 2000 RPM.. but Im thinking its the idle adjustment screw since somehow its broke?
It dies if I take the jumpers off.. stupid alternator apparently just died... need to get a replacement for that now :/ since the battery is brand new

You can't adjust the idle on a Renix Cherokee.. its set by the ECM.
Sometimes the TPS or IAC will become full of crud and that will effect the idle. Try the IAC first. Pull it out of the throttle body and clean it and the orifice well.

that is a balast resistor that should have no more than .8 ohms it is part of the ignition system used with certan distributors if it is bad you will not be able to start the veh. it gives no warning it just goes out its like a fuse its made of ceramic with a metal coil wire in the middle its purpose is to blow out if there is a voltage or amp spike in the ignition system there cheap and i would suggest keeping a spare one in the glove box

it is a balast resistor but it is NOT part of the ignition. It is used to furnish voltage to the fuel pump in the tank. when you start your XJ the balast is by-passed creating the full 12 volts to the fuel pump for fast pressure to the injectors, after it is started, the power goes to the pump thru this balast resistor, when the motor is running, check the voltage to the resistor with the volt meter on the DC setting. You should have battery voltage on one side and about 11 volts on the other. I had 5.5 volts and my XJ rad like crap, chugging and bucking and backfiring and all sorts of embarrassing things, I replaced this balast resistor, and had 11.5 volts out and now she runs like a champ. hope this helps to clear up the mysterious part....
