What is normal running temperature for a 2000 4wd automatic?
I recently purchased a 2000 XJ with around 180,000 miles on the body and 4000 miles on a rebuilt engine.
Has a 3 inch lift, running 33 inch tires and stock gearing. Has a steel front/rear bumper and a steel roof rack.
Ive noticed that she runs a little warm. Around 210 - 215 with out the AC running and tops out at about 225 with the AC blowing at full blast at highway speeds.
No noticeable change when idle or in traffic. If anything it cools down from 225.
Is this considered running warm? Local, trusted mechanics told me that this is pretty normal with an I6 XJ.
Fan clutch is perfectly fine, Efan kicks on when supposed to.

imo, depends on ambient air temp, under approx 75F, mine never runs over about 90C, but once the ambient gets into the 80s and above, it never idles much under 220F
In most cases though, it will run cooler at highway speeds, as airflow thru the radiator is much better, so if yours doesnt, my first suspect would be the radiator (try running the heater as a test, as it increases effective radiator capacity)
I cannot comment on how an XJ should run at cool temps, as the minimum we ever get is in the 40s

Am I reading this correct?
You engine coolant temp is ~ 90 deg F if the ambient air temp is ~75 deg F ?? I would say the T-stat is stuck open.

Factory stat is 195*F. Gauges in the dash are notoriously inaccurate. Use an infra-red thermometer at the thermostat housing for verification.

Youre fine. Normal operating temp for the 4.0L is 210. The fan should kick on around 215-218, IIRC. With the ac running you could see 220. Ive read of others hitting 225 which is pushing it, imo. I would say that as long as the fan kicks on and the temp stays at or under 220 (with the ac running), i wouldnt worry about it. With the ac OFF, it should stay pretty close to 210.
Cause I know this is a mainly USA forum, and I am old enough to remember when we had F measurements, I do the conversion for youse
This time I ballsed up a bit, sorry
