I pulled apart the dash to clean the gauge cluster connections and I found this box to the right of the gauge cluster. It is not secured down and says Eclipse on the side. I haven't tried following the wires because they go into the dash. Any clues?

After doing a quick Google search I came up with it being a gps system. Do you know if this used to be a government vehicle or a rental? Usually those had these in there.

That's a tracking device the Feds put into the Jeep. They were probably tracking suspected drug dealers or terrorists.

You weren't supposed to find that.

 

May actually be a GPS tracker for a car dealer. A lot of buy here pay here places use them so they can find the vehicle if the person stops making payments.

 

Only if there's a radio to send the position. Does this box have a radio? If not, was the sending radio removed?

Since all this hardware costs many $$$, why wouldn't it have been removed prior to the sale to the OP? I assume the OP has a clear title, so the seller would have been the box installer.

Of course, could be an Oops, forgot.

I don't know. My neighbor does repos. He was telling me that a few of the used car lots use them. He just calls them up and they can look on the computer and tell him exactly where the car is located at that time. He said they normally remove them before turning over the title.

 

This is simply a navigation add-on that goes with an Eclipse head-unit that supports it.

There's not tracking going on here.

I'd pull it out in one piece and list it on Ebay for 100 bucks and be done with it.

 

I am glad no body is tracking my every move! It has an antenna thing coming out the back hatch stuck on the roof. You really think someone will buy this thing? That would be awesome! I'll have to try and sell it. Thanks for all the info.
