Default What kind of trans and tcase do i have?

Stock 97 cherokee country-4X4
4spd w/overdrive?

Can anyone talk about specs of the tcase?

They work fine, but assuming the POs have never touched these things-what kind of maintenence should i dive into?

Future problems?

you have an Asin-Warner AW4 automatic transmission, I would do a fluid and filter change on that.

the transfercase is either a NP231(part-time 4WD only) or an NP242(part-time and full-time 4wd)

Just change the fluids and you should be ok, both the transmission and transfercase are built tough and don't break under normal usage

take your VIN to a Chysler dealer and have him run it. he'll give you a couple of sheets with evey option and component it left the factory with.

Part time on the 242, or 4 hi and 4 low on the 231 should never be used on dry pavement. The 242 had a full time option. That you could leave it in all the time.

The NP242 "Select Trak" had full time 4wd, allowing you to use it on the road/dry pavement/etc, By the New Process Nomeclature system, it is also 1 point stronger than the NP231.

The NP231 "command Trak" did not have full time 4wd, you cannot use it on dry roads.
The NP242 4wd selection lever will have:
2hi
4wd PT
4wd FT
N
4 LO

The NP231 will have:
2hi
4HI
N
4Lo
