Default What kind do I havee.... NEED QUICK HELP..

I have a 1998 cherokee classic and everything is stock on it. What kind of transfer case do i have and what kind of transmission. Its a straight 6 engine.

Look on your 4wd selector switch. Do you have 4PT - N - 4LO, or do you have 4PT - 4FT - N - 4LO.

If the second one, it's a np242. If you don't have the FT option, then it's a np231.

Edit: I should specify, that is for your transfer case. If it's an automatic, then most likely it's an AW-4 transmission. If standard, then AX-15.

its a automatic and i think its 4h then goes on from there. 4h n then i cant remeber the rest im not with my jeep right now. i know my back axle is a 8.25 if that helps any.

Well if you don't have the 4 Fulltime, then it's a 231. Automatic tranny is AW4.

I know your question already appears to be answered, but for future reference, E-mail Chrysler and ask them for a build sheet. It obviousely wont tell you things that the PO did to it, but it gives you a good starting point as far as knowing what you have. They will of course want you to tell them when you got it and from where (proof of ownership) but I gotta say they were way cool, ended the e-mail with, welcome to your jeep let us know if theres anything we can help you with. Pretty cool for a company that at this time knew mine was atleast 11-12 years old.
