That's your Heater Control Valve.

The small grey hose is your vacuum line, and then it has both inlet and return hoses for your coolant. The inlet and return hoses run through the firewall into your heater core.... Just look at the hoses and you'll see what is labled inlet and return, there are arrows on them.

I had to replace my heater control valve a couple of months ago, they're a common issue with the XJs. I bought a new one for $17 at autozone.

....or the heater control valve can eliminated, like on the '98.

That's a nightmare of a piece! Had that on my 89. had to make hoses for it. And I got it from the dealer!

i would suggest changing all the attaching hoses when you change that valve. all the gunk and crap that built up in them from the heater not being on will eventually break off and clog your radiator. and you can get universal heater hose for like 5 feet for 2 bucks or something

That is a must! Hoses are cheap and easy to cut.
