Default Weak power steering

I have a 1997 Cherokee sport, the power steering is very weak at low rpms. Any way to tell if it is the pump or steering gear? Or something else?

Logically the symptoms indicate the pump. Considering it's a heck of a lot cheaper and easier to replace than the gear, I'd start there.

I had the same issue this summer(well, it was bad for a while). I replaced with a remanufactured A1 Cardone. It pumped fine, but howled like crazy. Yes I bled and flushed it well. Then I warrantied it out for another, that one howled worse.

Then I spent the big bucks on a reman from the dealer. Quiet as a mouse, even smoother than the A1 Cardone junk.

Here's a video I took of the A1 Cardone. It's what all the parts stores sell.

Don't waste time with the parts store PS pumps - 80% seem to be bad out of the box.

Take your pump to a local power steering rebuilder and tell him to rebuild it and test it. I think I spent $40 or something for the rebuild and its been perfect
