Yeah, never mess with the adjustment screw on the box, it will only make the steering feel goofy and won't self center if you go too far.

 

When you say done with the box on the bench? What is the box? Excuse my ignorance as to the jeep jargon.

 

The steering box, It's where the shaft to your steering wheel ends! Trust us. Those of us who have done an adjustment there with success can be considered lucky.

After you get your real problems sorted out, if you still have play in your steering wheel, then you might look at that. (the steering box)

 

I get play sometimes and then no play in the steering wheel. Could that be tie rod stuff. Or the steering box losing something inside.?

UPDATE. Play shows up when turn the steering wheel CCW. Not in the CW direction. Feels like Bushings?

Is there a diagram or a something listing the names of the front end parts? I really get all tangled up in their names but I know what they do. I'd like to get something like that before I start working on it. I have been looking at the under carriage and looks like bushings need replacing.

Is it wise to replace the bushings in the track bar or buy entire new assembly. I can press bearings/bushings in and out but is it a problem with older Jeeps, 1994. Saves a bunch of $ but is it worth it? And what is TRE? Is thee a place on this forum for the acronyms?
Talk about if need replace, then upgrade? Any recommendations for good places to buy? I assume online is less too.

 

TRE= tie rod end. For the track bar bushing all you do is remove the bushing completely and push the poly bushing in by hand. An OEM style track bar is going to have a rubber bushing in it. If the ball joint end of the bar is ok I would just replace the bushing. If you plan on lifting your Jeep you may want to upgrade to a double shear adjustable track bar.

 

Thanks. Tie Rod End. Clears that up. No lift planned now. Just making it road worthy for my backup and weekend driver. I commute too far to afford feeding the gas bill. And rather put the miles on a car that deserves it. I think the ball joint may need replacing. Is that a press fit? Sorry all the questions, I like to know what I'm getting into. Not as nimble with my left hand- Thanks to work accident &&%^&$^*%$&*% . So I plan.

 

Is there one bushing or two? The guy at napa thought was front and back.

Those are supposed to move like that. But that doesn't mean they are good. Basically you need an assistant to turn the streering wheel wihile you lay under the jeep looking for things to move in ways they should not.. I would also be concentration mostly on the bad U-joint, the trackbar and the ball joints. The bad TRE's are more likely to cause sloppy steering feel than death wobble
