Unhappy Vibrations + Clunk on hard acceleration

(2000 Sport 207K 4WD 4H.O. 3.5" Metalcloak Lift w/ 33x12.5x15s)

Hey guys,

Wanted to seek the wisdom of this great community. I recently noticed symptoms of a vibration under my foot on hard/regular acceleration. Under soft acceleration, there is not much. Also, there is now a clunk if I make a hard stop or make a hard acceleration.

I suspected my front driveshaft to be the source of the vibration because of the location, but after removing it and driving around there is no change. Checked Motor Mounts for the source of the clunking, they look fine.

My next suspicion is the transmission mount because the clunking feeling feels like it is behind me. I thought it was also my rear tire carrier, tightened it all to spec and nothing budges. (Also owned it for 2 years now and this is brand new issue)

Context of this issue, I daily drive this jeep but noticed the issue soon after a weekend long wheeling my jeep, which is not usual for the rig. Thanks guys.

Is the vibration kind of like a shudder, or rattle? Also, the clunk you are describing is different from the vibration, correct?

The Vibration is a shutter. The Clunk is a seperate issue that occcured at the same time as the vibration.

Ok I'm not sure about the clunk, but in my stock '96 manual there is a shudder coming from behind me just in 1st gear when Im not on the gas hard and the clutch is just after the bite point. Doesn't happen if Im on the gas hard when releasing the clutch, and only in 1st. I'm pretty sure (and hoping) its the transmission mount. Ive got new tranny and motor mounts arriving tomorrow and can give you an update after I get em installed.

Take a long screwdriver or a prybar and wedge it between the tranny or xfer case and the frame or cross-member and see if you can move it. If you can you need a new mount.

Also check your u-joints on the rear shaft.

I got under my 95 this weekend, mostly to check the leaf springs out since they're a little saggy. While I was under there I found movement in my rear shaft u-joints - it was pretty obvious just by holding the rear axle yolk and twisting the shaft by hand. I also had a bit of movement on the tranny mount.
Even with this little bit of play I had no clunk or bad vibes.. just a bit of loose feeling.

You should also check your exhaust - if it's loose it can bang on the crossmember.
Shock mounts front and back can cause clunk and vibe as well.

Thanks for the ideas! I suspect trans mount. Will check the others though.

I just bought a Mopar mount - there were a couple places that had it around $45 - I'm not sure if the 2k is different though. You may have heard the key tip of NOT using Anchor brand mounts - Mopar or Napa seem the consensus replacements.

Finished replacing the mounts today, for what it's worth to anyone reading - because of the work involved using the Energy Suspensions polyurethane mounts and reusing the stock steel frames, if I did this again I would just pony up for Brown Dogs.

Anyway, took it for a spin and the shudder/shake I feel and hear when half clutch, low gas in 1st gear is still there. It really sounds like its coming from the rear diff, or maybe its the exhaust knocking around but I doubt it. Hard to tell because I'm inside the car..

Hopefully the mounts fix your issue Sethers!

Update to this thread,

I bought a daystar trans mount from Amazon and removed my 1" TCase Spacers. Seemed to help some but the mount is pretty stiff, so I feel the idle vibrations from the tunnel much more. Not a bad feeling though.

I would guess trans mount or maybe rear axle wrap making rear driveshaft ears bang together
