Default Very rough in reverse, smells rich sometimes

Hey all.

For about a week now, when I put the XJ in reverse, it stutters. The power is there if I hit the throttle, but if I just put in reverse and no pedal, its very rough!

Today, while driving at about 45km/h the jeep died when I left off the throttle. Most posts Ive searched suggest the TPS. Could mine be bad while giving good readings?

I have recently done plugs, wires, cap, rotor, Camshaft position sensor and distributor. Seafoam, injector upgrade. All of this was about 5000 km ago, and ran fine.

In Neutral, or park, it runs fine for the most part, but sometimes goes rough and smells EXTREMELY RICH, like a bad 2 stroke!

I checked the TPS, read properly from 0.8VDC up to 4.62VDC smoothly. CEL is on, and I have the following.

P0138 02 Sensor circuit - High voltage
P0204 Injector circuit - cylinder 4
P0304 Cyl 4 misfire
P0705 Transmission range sensor malfunction
P1491 Powertrain.

Check the fuse for the O2 sensors in the fuse box under the hood, before you replace them. That code is for the rear sensor after the cat. it has nothing to do with the mixture so your gas smell is probably coming from the misfire on #4. It is very possible that the TPS is bad and still could test ok. Did you use a digital volt meter or analog? With the analog you can see the needle drop off during the sweep indicating one bad spot in the circuit. Also check that the IAC is working and not caked with carbon and other deposits. If the IAC is not able to move that would cause a stall and rough idle too.

OK so after a lot of looking, cleaning etc. I found the issue. The fuel rail is cutting into the wiring harness. I figured since I was getting multiple codes all of a sudden, it was weird!

I'll clean these up, and wrap it/pull it out of the way.

I suppose it was happening more in reverse because of the tilt of the motor causing a short.

Cleared the codes, 250 km drive, and nothing came back!

...
And Yes, changing that broken ground strap is high on the list!

Glad you found it. I was going to say something about the ground strap.

I bought a parts jeep just lately, and the exact same spot is melting into his fuel Rail.

Obviously a common problem. Recommend everyone take a look there, and pin up that second loom if its not already!
