Exclamation valve cover gasket!

ok i'm really confused about valve cover gaskets. i bought a felpro cork gasket and some red Permatex High-Temp Red RTV silicone gasket maker. i've been told a million different ways to change my valve cover gasket and i just want to know the best possible way with what i have. if anyone could help me out that would be great because my valve cover is leakin like a ***** and needs a new gasket lol.

--thanks.

Yeah you want the expensive rubber felpro gasket. The cheapo one is well cheapo...I have the rubber one and no leaks what so ever. When it comes to engine gaskets you do not go cheap.

I used a cork fel pro gasket with red rtv to hold the gasket to the cover while I installed it. no leaks thus far. I cleaned everything really well and used a razor to scrape the old gasket off.

ok so i lost the receipts for the cork gasket and the rtv lol but i'll go get the rubber gasket. so basically, you just take off the valve cover, slip on the gasket, and close it back up? no sealant?

i just looked it up on autozone and the permadry felpro gasket is $53. that's way out of the budget but i'll try.

clean the surfaces well, try the dealer, sometimes their gaskes are reasonable. i agree 53 is excessive, but if you have 30 in cheaper parts, another 20 for good parts is worth it.

If you bought the other gasket and rtv at Autozone they should take it back and have your purchase on teh computer. Should not be an issue if you are buying another one from them.

Check out rockauto for that felpro permadry gasket, they have it for 34.99, much cheaper than vatozone... Here's a link:

Permadries are the way to go. I put one on my oil pan and no leaks thus far. I'm gonna put one on the valvecover at next required change which should be soon. It has a POS cork gasket on it now.

Felpro cork gasket attached to valve cover with Permatex Hi-Tack to clean surfaces. Never a problem on any of them i have installed. Most failures i have seen can be attributed to overtightening.
