Default Valve Cover

I tried searching but I could not find the info. What is the difference between valve covers through the years of the Cherokee? I over tightened a bolt and cracked a corner piece on my valve cover. I have a 94' Cherokee SE with a 4.0L, auto and no under the hood mods. What would be the year ranges for this?

From what I have gleaned from other jeepers. In the early to mid 90's Jeep went to using a plastic valve cover for cost savings in production. Don't know if that is true. Supposedly they went back to metal when they had a recall due to the plastic warping and causing oil leaks.

Hmm interesting. Never heard that before. I wanna say I doubt that's true. I don't know why an automobile manufacturer would think that's a good idea in the first place.

Cruiser?? These are your Renix's we're talking about here

Well, he's not entirely wrong. Some of the Jeep inline motors did use plastic valve covers. I believe some years the 2.5 and the 4.2 had them. I haven't seen a 4.0 that does, but it wouldn't be a huge shock.

It is. Everything plastic under the hood cracks eventually. Heater control valves, radiator tanks.... Good enough to make it past the warranty period I suppose.

Renix, 91-96, and 97+ I believe have different setups for the CCV baffles. Renix ones I know have long tubes, my '99's has this piece of stamped metal deflecting oil back at the valves.

They probably all work fine, eith some cosmetic differences and exact placement of the CCV elbows. If you pick up a new one verify that the little studs the throttle cable brackets sit on are in the same spots.

Plastic was on the old 258s. 4.0s came out with aluminum. Went to steel later.
