I would pass its a 01 and the dealer can't get his story straight... It's a lot of money to buy a lemon

When you test drive it, before you start the motor, turn the key to the "run" position. All the dash lights should come on. Verify that the CEL lights up. If it doesn't, there's a chance they unplugged it or removed it just so they could sell it. If it does light up, but it's not there after the xj starts, take a long test drive (the aforementioned 20-30miles) to see if it'll come back on. Ask them what the codes were when it was on. Don't buy it today, and check back here with the codes.
