Default Upper/lower control arms purpose

Hey everyone I was wondering if anyone could explain to me what the purpose of the control arms are for, and if you need to get longer ones for a 3 inch lift.

they hold your axle in place from going front to back...lifting it will bring the front axle back a little bit but i believe it is in rage where you dont need longer ones but would ride better with longer ones cause it would bring it back forward to stock position
