Default undercharging then overcharging??

so I bought another Cherokee back in November and needless to say it has been a long project in the works. but anyhow... when I am driving, my generator light will come on because its overcharging but if I run any accessories it will undercharge at idle. I should mention that the alternator that the idiot p/o rigged up is a Chevy alternator. is this a voltage regulator issue that can just be fixed with a new alternator or what? any help is much appreciated!!

Converting back to the correct alternator would be the first step in fixing this one, along with verifying that the harness is put back like Chrysler designed it to be. In my experience, any charging variation is generally the voltage regulator, so an alternator replace is a great place to start.

I'm also going to repeat what several others on this forum say about chasing electrical problems on these Jeeps: refresh all engine and body grounds under the hood, removing screws and sanding connecting surfaces until SHINY! This includes both battery posts. I paint these freshly sanded surfaces with dielectric (anti-corrosion) grease before reassembling.

Good luck.

Grounds grounds grounds. And putting it back to a Jeep alternator would probably help too

well I plan to convert back eventually. They got rid of a lot of stock wiring so it will be work. But thanks for the advice. I will keep you posted after I hunt down some grounds haha.

No issue with the grounds. Its the volt regulator. The altenator is from a 86 monte carlo haha
