I believe they are for the factory front skid plate to attach. The three holes with welded nuts on the passenger side and one hole on the driver side.

+1 the holes in the frame rail are for aiding in assembly (no thread) and the skid plate (threaded). Also, keep in mind that there was only one frame build for LHD, RHD, 2.5L gas, 4.0L gas, and 2.5L diesel models... so you may never actually know

Word to the wise about the water shield you've still got in there: take a look on top of it, mine was holding a lot of salt water against the oil pan and caused a lot of rust to form.

Yeah that's for the stock skid. If you are bored, and have the ability and want to make your own skid it might be fun, but your local junkyard might have a stock front skid if you want it. I have not found one on any of the Cherokees in my local jy's, but if you have one local they might have one.

I've seen two and bought one of those engine skids since I jumped into the XJ world.

Transfer-case skid-plate?
I found a guy who has the steering skid-plate. He also reports he has a transfer-case skid-plate. Help with where/what it is installed?

I picked up a factory front skid for $30 from a guy on CL a few weeks back. I figured it might at least prevent something from going up into the fan or serp belt. The factory t-case skid is better than nothing but I would spend a little more on an aftermarket beefier alternative.
