They are supposed to be very tight. Would hate to have a u-bolt fall off while driving down the road

It is recommended to replace the bolts when you replace the leafs. After the years of grime on the u-bolts they are pretty messed up. You should be able to pick up a set from an auto parts store. To take off the old ones, you might need use a hack saw (That's how I got a set of leafs off a s10)

they mat be a size to small if there that tight. i believe you meen tight as in tight fitting around the axle tube... not tight when you tighten the nuts down on them?

mine were very snug/tight but slid on ok with a few taps with a mallet, shouldnt need any more or they are prolly the wrong size.

If you have a Chryco 8.25, or D44 rear axle, alot of parts stores and lift kit makers provide u bolts for the D35 by default. Usually they ask you to specify your axle to provide proper ubolts, but not always. Rough Country never asked me to specify my axle when I ordered my lift, and I got ubolts for a D35 by default. They didn't fit so good on my 8.25's axle tubes. Had to get different ones from the parts store to finish the job!

they are new ubolts. i bought them with lots of other stuff of a guy from craigslist. http://newjersey.craigslist.org/pts/1034897481.html. I ended up getting all this for 300. I haven't started the leaf spring job i just noticed that the ubolts i was given were alittle tight. i can probally hammer em up in place. i was just wondering if thats how they are suppose to be or if i should go buy bigger ubolts. if i hammer them up i may ruin the treads on them.

They shouldn't be tight enough that the ubolt actually has to bend to fit onto the axle tube. It should be very snug to the tube, but not obviously too tight for it. What rear axle do you have on your XJ? If you wanted to be sure you could bring the ubolts you have to a parts store and ask to see some ubolts for your axle and compare the two. If the ones you have are obviously smaller than the ones for your axle that they show you, then you probably have the wrong ubolts..

In that case the ubolts are probably for a D35 or D44, neither of which will fit your chryco 8.25. You will probably need to go pick up some new ubolts for your application. Not to worry though, I don't remember exactly what mine cost, but it wasn't terribly expensive or anything...
