My 97 xj sport has a problem with the turn signal stalk..the stalk works perfectly fine when it comes to operating the high and low beams and it will operate the right turn signal but it will not move down at all to turn on the left turn signal...as if something is blocking it from moving downwards...and it also stopped self cancel when i turn the steering wheel back to center...

 

I never had the stalk not move so im not sure whats wrong there, but the not cancelling is typically the clockspring. Both issues may be related, but im not sure. There are two tiny fingers on the backside of the clockspring that can break off, that are for the turn signals. You should still be able to manually cancel them, which is what mine needs when turning right. You can rig the clockspring to work again, or you can replace it entirely. IF you replace the clockspring, there is one with cruise, and one without. If you do not have cruise, use either one. Disconnect the battery and leave it sit for a couple minutes before messing with the airbag. You will also need a steering wheel puller.
