well, I just spend the last 10 minutes reading this thread. There is a concensus of people liking the factory style, as well as some buying into the hype of the "fancier" plug, ie...iridium, platinum, double platinum..and so on...I just recently wasted the past year of my life as a "counter jockey" for advance auto. I will tell you, I dealt with some auto repair shops who deal solely on replacing factory parts with factory parts, dealt with a few who didn't care, whatever was cheaper...and a few who wanted the best we could offer, money no option. I personally am running E3's in my jeep now, averaging about 17mpg's, and for a 4.0 that has 216,000 miles, I would say that's ok. I think if you want to run the more expensive plugs, put them in...run them for a year...if they don't perform like you want, try a different set, you may go through 30 bucks a year, but if you find something you like...screw what anyone else thinks. if your jeep is happy, you are happy...

I've seen nobody mention NGK plugs... I know a lot of people on the forum swear by those too. Any comments? Usually when it comes to spark plugs, the big two are NGK and Champion. I've been told that our ignition system doesn't push the oomph that would make a platinum or iridium plug beneficial. Plus, our system was designed and fitted with copper plugs from the factory... from factory, the 4.0 got roughly 20 mpg highway. Why not stay factory?

84-99: Champion copper spark plugs. No benefit to using platinum for conductivity as copper is actually better. Platinum can give you an extended life, but that's about it.
00-01 with the distributorless coil pack system: NGK spark plugs. These plugs seem to hold up better with the waste spark type of ignition.
With either of the above, change em at 30k.
Bosch plugs have been responsible for some mysterious misfires in some (not all to be fair) 4.0 engines. Swapping Bosch for NGK or Champion cleared up these misfires. Because of that, I won't recommend or install them (and I'm a big Bosch fan!).

when it comes to factory vs aftermarket/modern tech
I always yield to the modern proven tech
When people say stuff like, the engineers worked on this and this is what they recommend, its not always the clearest picture
you see they designed the thing for cost, not performance or efficiency
so yea the champions work good, but they are not necessarily the best thing for it just because mopar spec'd those for it. especially not now
Modern tech will always help out older tech, just look at some of the older engines running modern ignition and fuel injection, you get modern driveability, and efficiency
just because a 1968 Chevy 327 called for AC Delco copper plugs doesnt mean that its the best

What's the plug gap for 4.0L motors? Mine's a '91 HO. I'll be using standard Champion copper plugs.
I searched and couldn't find an answer and didn't want to make a whole new thread just to ask that....

Just installed champion coppers along with napa premium wires and cap and rotor. PO (US fed park service) was running autolite copper. Can't really tell if theres a difference between them as I also swapped in injectors from a '06 3.3L and I'm noticing a big increase in throttle response. The champions certainly didn't hurt.

Ok. I could not get plain jane champion spark plug. I got the NGK version. They have the same power. I do notice that I have more power with higher rpms and I feel I lost mid range. But a little pick up on the acceleration. NGK are great. I don't know if it's because I haven't changed them in a year. But they are close to the champion plugs.
