Had one in my front 44 HATED it. It worked as well as an open diff. They say you can use your brakes to help lock them up but it's hard to use the brake pedal climbing rocks.

I have run them front and rear for about 4 years now, love them.
I wheel a 5spd, in Arizona, where there is nothing but rocks.
With 2 wheels in the air, yes, you will need to run the brakes to make them work.
Check my album for places they have taken me. Also, someone on here posted a few videos for my rig on the rocks... try a search on TrueTrac and you will find more info.

Front TrueTrac
I have a TrueTrac in my front end. I drove through knee high snow in Big Bear like I was king of the mountain. I'm fixing to put a TrueTrac in the rear end.
