Default TrueTrac - what do I need to order?

I'm looking at fitting True-Trac LSDs to my Jeep. I know, they're not full lockers but for the relatively flat but slippery terrain we have round here I think they'd be great for a DD. I don't do any hard core wheeling, but I do need an unbeatable snow-jeep and I'm running 235/75 tyres.

I have a 1997 XJ with 4.0 and auto. As I read it, I need to be sure of my spline count and gear ratios. I reckon they'll be 27 spline and 3.55:1 I can see TrueTracs listed for 27 spline axles, but I'm confused as to what difference it the ratio makes if I'm keeping the same ring gear.

Is THIS what I need for the rear?
and
THIS for the front? (pricy!)

Thanks for looking!

I'm pretty certain I'll have to order from the US so shipping will be fierce, I really don't want to have to do a return from the UK!

The one for the front looks right. You sure you've got the Dana 35 in the rear though? Do you have ABS brakes?

Don't forget new bearings and shims and if you've never set up a ring and pinion, add in the cost of a shop installing them. Since you'll be pulling everything out you'll have to set up the gears just like if they were new. Here it runs anywhere from 200-400 per axle to set them up, no clue what it'd be in your neck of the woods.

I do have ABS but I'll go and check the diff case again before ordering :-)
I'll definitely be getting someone else to fit them, and they should be able to source bearings and shims locally.

This is what you need for your Dana 30. I ordered this exact part 2 years ago. Much better price.

Amazon Amazon

edit: If you're doing this yourself, know what you're getting into. It's one of the few things I didn't even both to try doing myself. I bought the parts and had a shop install. There is a reason a regear costs about $400/axle in labor alone...

That really IS a better price! And it makes the front much more likely if only I can get them to ship to England.

I won't be doing this myself. My skills just about get an oil change done :'(

Thanks for the info - much appreciated

Hey Morat. I'm moving to the UK at the end of next week; I'll be down around Oxford. Have you thought about finding a Cherokee with the stock limited slip Chrysler 8.25 in the junk yard (scrapyard for you) and swapping it to your Cherokee? I don't know if any of those were imported into the UK but it is a better axle than the Dana 35 too. Good luck.

Have you got any spare luggage space? :-) Welcome to a small island ;-) Where will you be heading?

As far as I have seen, all cherokee in the UK have ABS so I don't think the are any 8.25 axles around. I'll keep my eyes open though.

I think that all Cherokee's with the tow package have the 8.25 axle. I wish I was bring my Cherokee but can't.

You should bring over some quality parts and build up one over here, then sell it to me when you go home :-)

Oxford is fun, although not exactly jeep country. More bicycles there...and language students
You'll have a ball!

I'm looking for a project vehicle for while I'm there. I don't need another Cherokee and everyone does Mini's; a Brit friend suggested a Ford Cortina.

I know I am asking a silly question, but is a full locker in front diff not as desirable as a selectable? ARB-air operated or a E-locker would be more desirable?
I am looking at installing a limited slip or full locker in my rear diff and a ARB in front

I think it is down to what you want to use the jeep for. My jeep is 90% pavement princess so I want good manners on the road. The chances of me lifting a wheel are pretty slim so lsd make sense especially for snowy conditions and a 242 TC .

My last jeep did really well with the factory lsd in the back and open diff in the front... I'm just being greedy ;-)
