Default Trouble getting transfer case into neutral

I am towing a Cherokee behind a motor home. Yesterday when I hooked up, even though the lever felt like it was in neutral, the dash light said Part Time. When put in Drive it would move. I went from Drive to Reverse and back several times, trying the Neutral each time and finally got it to work. Any suggestions for an easier way to get it in Neutral? With my Wrangler with 5 speed, if I back up about 15' and then go forward it goes into Neutral easily.
