You're a special kind of stupid. I knew how to change shocks before my first ASE.

You don't have AAA? Yeah, you don't understand the Jeep thing.

Advanced auto mechanics? You've got to be ****ing kidding me. Hey bimmer/beamer/***** boy you ever been near any of the high end imports???? A Jeep is a breeze compared to them.

Sir Bimmer, I would like to present you the Tard of The Year Award for Excellence in Stupidity, WTF moments, and just out right failing at being a Jeep owner.

Congratulations.

Like I said, every single step is a potential problem.
You must have THE WORST luck I've ever heard of! Another thing a dremel is good for is to cut a nice, deep notch for a flat head screwdriver to fit into. Yes, you'd have to remove the bezel etc to get to it, but you could put some more torque on that screw to remove it. I drill bolts/screws out as a last resort. You'll jack up the threads on whatever used to be holding the bolt/screw in creating yet another problem to solve. Well, I should say you COULD jack up those threads. Someone will probably tell me I have no idea what I'm doing either if I can't drill out a bolt without jacking up the threads on whatever was holding said bolt. You can conquer this beast, dude.

Posting in a bimmer thread.

I used cut off wheels to trim the heads off the bolts by slicing them up a few times, hitting them with a wood chisel, then drilling holes into the rusty parts, and knocking the weld nuts off with a punch.

Fish some wire through and you can pull the new fixin' bolts up.

I can't push the shock to the side if you can't remove the shock from the lower bolt.

This weekend, I bought a pickle fork for my air compressor, so I will use that to try to pry off the shock.
I also bought pry bar set, so I will try them, since the long pipe didn't work.
Since the upper bolts are rounded, I guess I can hack them up.

To all the "only $200 worth of tools" folks out there,
here are all the tools I've purchased JUST to try these rear shocks:

$300 compressor
$20 air chisel
$10 chisels
$50 impact wrench
$10 impact extension bars
$100 impact sockets
$50 pry bars
$10 pickle fork
$50 Dremel

LOL, OVER $600 worth of tools JUST for this rear shock job.
One thing I tell ya, boy, this auto mechanics hobby is more expensive than golfing!

The local stealership quoted $233 for rear shocks (including parts!)
I think this is why no one fixes their cars and everyone leases brand new cars.
I'm in for $700 including parts, and only have 1 shock installed (and an easy 40 hours of research and shopping time invested)
It's way cheaper to get your car fixed at the dealer while sipping a latte and driving a brand new loaner car.
Yes, $600 vs $233. The list is right there in front of your face.

I heard it was a nightmare to punch out those weld nuts with an awl, and it was HIGHLY suggested you own an air chisel to do this job.

It makes a lot of sense b/c there is no way in hell I am getting a clean hammer shot facing upwards on those weld nuts way up in that cavity.
Maybe if you grew up doing this stuff, but not me.

I have said it once and will say it again. Sell the barnacle. When you write your CL ad, make sure to include your Spongebob screwdriver to facilitate faster sale.

Seconded.HERE, HERE!!!
Save your time, money, frustration level...sell your Jeep, sell all your tools. Buy a non-rusted vehicle instead, and let a qualified mechanic work on it. Not everyone is cut out to work on cars. You are one of those people. If you sold your barnacle and all your tools, find a good rust free vehicle, and let someone else do the work, trust me...you'll be ahead.

How can you not get the shock off of the lower mount?

I do not own any air tools.

LOL, OVER $600 worth of tools JUST for this rear shock job.
You must be young and just heading out on your own for the first time or just very un-mechanically inclined. Both can be fixed with time and patience......usually.

The satisfaction of learning to fix something yourself is priceless. The blood shed, aggravation and cuss words are badges to be worn with pride when you succeed with your mission. Welcome to the game called life.

All those tools you bought "just" to remove 2 shocks will be available to use on your next task and the one after that. They should last for years. You can't have to many tools in my opinion. Heck, soon you'll have tools to fix your tools.

I applaud you for doing research before jumping in......but just LISTEN to the advice you're given when a problem arises.......usually it is from guys who've been in your shoes and have some experience with the job at hand.
