i have just purchased a 97 cherokee 4x4 4door with auto trans 4.0L. only problem is it has a blown trans. i was wondering which ones are interchageable. i know that some years can use other years trans, but what about 97? do i need a 97 and up or will an older one work? are there different models for the sports? it is a sport model. can i use an older trans? any help would be appreciated.
also, Stryker, thanks for the advice when i was trying to get that one that 89 that overheated. i held out and got this 97 for $1500. only thing wrong is the trans. thanks again for everyones advice. this site has been a great help. here are some pics

I'm not so sure about the compatibility of newer models of xj in terms of transmission...
But the best thing to do is to buy a 97 trans. which you can assure that it will definitely work well...

The tranny has needs to be from 97-99 and a 4wd not a 2wd...Thinks changed a bit in the 00-01 models and that's based purely on FSM info....Now the newer 00-01 trany can work but has more hassle just as using an older say 91-96 model also would work but would pose some hassles with computability as well..

I'd say yes...plus you have a 3 month warranty so ya can't go wrong at all as long as the tranny is from a cherokee that is also a 4x4..If it's from a 2wd no dice, just to much of a pain...
BUY IT!! NOW!! That's a great deal, at least IMHO. I have seen them for a little less, but no warranty, that deal sounds good to me. You'll know a lot about that tranny in three months!! Later!!

i thought it was a good price too. i found another for 450 with exchange. so i figured 300 is good. pull-a-part has it for like 100, but no warranty, plus i have to pull it. i'll let you know how everything goes. thanks.

Salvage ysrds that advertise on that site have to charge 25% less than they would on their counter prices. Be sure to tell them where you saw their transmission advertised and USE the stock number listed on car-part.com. I would even have someone call later an ask for the same part without mentioning car-part.com and see if their honest on the 25% off.
