Default Transmission Removal (AW4)

Hi folks, I am starting this thread for the questions I will have as a I go through removing my AW4 tranny on my 1999 Cherokee Limited, in order to replace the front tranny seal.

My first question -- do I need to be in neutral to start with ? If so, how do I do this --- turn the Jeep off in neutral? Is this really unneccesary as I will be undoing all the linkages and removing the driveshafts anyway?

Thanks!

Andy

You gonna pull both trans and transfer case as one unit or separately?

You don't have to be in neutral to pull the tranny, but it does make it easier when you pull the rear drive shaft. I suggest removing the t-case first and then the tranny, it will be easier to manhandle the tranny without the t-case in the way. It's only five extra nuts that you have to remove. Don't forget to remove the torque converter bolts before pulling the trans out.

Thanks, appreciate it. Looks like it might be better to pull the transfer case first. After I remove the rear driveshaft, do i need to do anying else to unbolt the transfer case from the tranny? is the transfer case attached to the transmission mount?

U ll need to take off the transmission mount in order to access the bottom two nuts that holds the transfer case on the trans.

Thanks for the tips, guys. I made good progress today, got the driveshafts off, starter, etc. One thing -- the transmission cooler lines on the passenger side, how do those come off? It looks like two plastic "ears" that you compress and then pull the metal line out? Is there a trick to this?
