Transmission rebuild???
Hello everyone this is my first post.
I am looking to buy a 99 cherokee 4x4 4.0 153,000 miles $2000. The only thing I can find wrong is the transmission slips. I don't have the know how to replace or rebuild a transmission so what would I expect to pay for a transmission rebuild/replace? Also advice on any good shops in the hampton roads area would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Islander80

Rebuilding a transmission can get to be pretty spendy and with an older vehicle, it can be hard to justify the cost.
A better option in my opinion is to find the lowest mileage salvage yard transmission and either do it yourself (get a manual) or find an independent shop that will quote you a reasonable price to swap them out (get at least TWO quotes!).
Good luck. 99 is a VERY good year for the XJ.
P.S. Before you write off that transmission, be sure the fluid is at the proper level on the dipstick with a HOT engine and a fully exercised transmission. And if the fluid is dirty brown or smells burnt, it might be worth it to try fresh fluid in there and see if that changes the symptoms.
