Default Transmission problems

My brother has a 1996 Cherokee Classic. He has some shifting issues with with his transmission. At first he thought it was a bad transmission, then I told him it could be the CPS. He checked the fluid and it was great. Here is what it does: Every once in awhile it seems like it won't shift, then if he takes his foot off the gas, then re-apply the gas it will be fine. Like I said it is every once in awhile not all the time. Anyone have a diagnosis?

Check the voltages on the TPS before calling the AW4 bad. May need adjusting along with the kick down cable.

I thought you could only adjust the TPS on Renix era 4.0's?

Since it's a 96 model, is the CEL on? Almost sounds like if not the TPS maybe a shift solenoid in the transmission.

Pull and clean the Neutral Safety Switch (NSS). The range selector signal goes throu it and can cause weird shifting, lack of O.D. and a P07XX error codes.

The TPS can be bad and testing it will tell you. I did not mention Adjustments but testing only. The following is from the 97 FSM. The adjustment I refered to was the cable to the tranny. They sometime slip their adjustments. Tranny may need the solinoids connections cleaned as well.

To perform a complete test of the TPS (Fig. 37) and
its circuitry, refer to the DRB scan tool and appropriate
Powertrain Diagnostics Procedures manual. To
test the TPS only, refer to the following:
The TPS can be tested with a digital voltmeter.
The center terminal of the TPS is the output terminal.
With the ignition key in the ON position, check the
TPS output voltage at the center terminal wire of the
connector. Check this at idle (throttle plate closed)
and at Wide Open Throttle (WOT). At idle, TPS output
voltage should be greater than .26 volts but less
than .95 volts. At wide open throttle, TPS output
voltage must be less than 4.49 volts. The output voltage
should increase gradually as the throttle plate is
slowly opened from idle to WOT.
