Transmission Pan

Default Transmission Pan

The bolt on my transmission oil pan is cross threaded. It will not come off. I will probably need a new pan and I am having a hard time locating one. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I already tried my local JY. They wanted $60. It's a 96 Classic.

Cross threaded? Won't come off?

I don't get it, Bolts are not backing out? Or you can't break the pan free?

More info would be good.

If the bolt is cross threaded that has nothing to do with replaceing the pan? If it is xthreaded then drill it and use an easy out. Then retap it to clean the threads up. Good luck.

Thanks for the quick responses. The bolt will not back out. It just spins. I can not make it tighter either. There is a point at which it it meets some resistance but if i screw it in any further it gets looser. Will probably just drill it out and rethread it. Anybody know the thread size?

I assume that you're talking about a drain plug spinning freely in the pan. You (or someone) probably broke the spot weld holding the threaded portion to the inside of the pan. In that case, retapping will not cure the problem. You'll need to drop the pan, remove the drain plug, and reweld the threaded plate to the inside of the pan.

Can something like JB be used instead of welding? It's my DD so welding presents a problem.

I doubt that JB Weld would hold a significant amount of torque applied to the drain plug. You'd have to remove the pan to apply the JB Weld anyway, so why not do it right and have someone spot weld it.

If it's not leaking much, then I'd just wait to get a trans pan from the FOR SALE part of this website.

Im pretty sure there is no drain plug on the transmission pan, the pan needs to be dropped for a fluid change.

As for the bolts not backing out. Try taking a small pry bar and putting pressure under the bolts while spinning them out. One of my bolts have the same prob.

I think the transmission is aluminum and the threads can go easily.

I have used a pair of end cutters a couple of times in the past to walk out stripped bolts in the trans pan. You just wedge them under the bolt head and pry down on it while backing it out with a wrench or socket. If it is sticking out far enough you can even use needle noise pliers. Generally once the bolt is out you can install a Hiel-a-coil and your back in the game. Almost every parts store sells hiel-a coil kits size would be 8mm X 1.25mm.

Both my '96 and '99 cherokees with the aw4 atx have trans pan drain plugs.
