I just picked up a 1992 cherokee with 79,000 miles on it. I have no service records. Dont know if the transmission fluid has ever been changed. Someone told me dont change it if your dont know because it could cause problems. Is this true? Should I change it or not? The fluid is not dirty
Thank you

If the fluid is red in color, it has been changed sometime in it's life. But you don't know when. So best to change it now so that you have a "baseline" and can calculate future change intervals.
Drain and fill will should do the trick. Use Dex/Merc III compatible.
Enjoy your XJ!

People say not to change fluid on high mileage transmissions because flushing the system has been known to cause issues if the fluid has never been done. A simple drain and fill cannot hurt and is always a good idea.
