Default Transmission Experts....

I've been having an issue lately that has pretty much baffled me. For the record.. Trans fluid has been drained and refilled just through the drain plug (not fully flushed), old fluid looked perfect and didn't smell burnt, new tps, tv cable adjusted.

Driving on the highway for 20-30 minutes she shifts fine, then all of a sudden it'll kick out of OD and rev hi, then once it catches OD again the rpms will bounce up and down a couple hundred like it's hunting. If I come to a stop and get going again, same deal it'll slip through the gears. Once it cools down its fine again, shifts like normal. Occasionally I can cut it off and turn it back on and it'll shift normal. Other times it won't shift normal until it cools down, even if I cut it off and back on.

I unplugged the TCU today when it happened and I could manually shift through 1,3,D with no problems... Then after a little bit it would just stay in 1st no matter what. I was in an area where I couldn't go over 30mph while doing this

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

You may have a solenoid issue.

Do this while you're at it:

Thanks cruiser, it certainly wouldn't hurt to go ahead and check out the connectors.

As for the solenoid issue, I was potentially thinking the same, but the fact that it will occasionally not shift out of first even manually had me thinking otherwise. I was going to try to test the solenoids through one of those connectors shown in your link.

All solenoids tested at 15.6 ohms, is this within spec? I believe I saw 11-15 or 11-18

I don't know personally.

How did those connectors look?
What did you do to them?

They all looked great, cleaned them with electric parts cleaner anyways but no corrosion from the naked eye

I agree, that's where I tested the resistance for the solenoids too. Just an update, drove home from work today and it began again. Pulled over and adjusted the TV cable and all was well. Still kind of baffled on how it can be fine for half of the drive home, then slip, then I turn it off for no longer than two minutes to adjust the TV cable, and then it's back to normal

I wonder if your tV cable is messed up.

15.6 is OK. Just a thought in case the problem returns- check them hot, preferably when the transmission is acting up and see if the reading changes substantially.

What did you use for ATF?

Radi offers excellent advice.

Have you ever singled out the ground wires for the TCU and verified how many ohms?

I haven't yet, will get to it this evening to verify and report back. Drove the jeep to work again this morning and there were no issues. Will see how it does this afternoon in the Texas heat

Wouldn't this eliminate an electrical control issue?

Sounds like a mechanical issue to me.

There should be a CEL on with a stored or pending P07XX code. CEL on provided the CEL bulb works.

Only transmission related CEL I had was from disconnecting the TCU. No comm between the PCM and TCU or something of that nature.

I was initially thinking mechanical too, but I've been able to turn it off and turn it immediately back on and it's fine, like something electronic reset possibly.. Other times, like yesterday, I adjusted the TV cable and it was fine. Will see how it is this afternoon
