Question transfere case swap

I have an xi with a blown transfers case and was wondering if it would be ok to put in a transfers case from a grand cherokee. Mine is part time four wheel drive and the grand is full time four wheel. My main concern is the grand has cv joint axles and mine has universal joints on the axle. Would this affect steering? Thanks. Btw I plan on doing about a 3" lift in the future if that makes a difference.

A 242 tranfer case from any XJ, is direct swap. Some ZJ 242 transfer cases are direct swap. You must match up on the input/output shaft spline counts, ZJ had a couple different versions. Also make sure you grab the shift bezel, nice to know what position the shifter is in.

A ZJ front axel is a direct swap into the XJ. Although some of the components are different.

Well my dad got the parts jeep for the front axle for his jeep. But since im helping strip it down he's letting me have some stuff I need. Already pulled the alternator and front drive shaft. Any easy way to find the spline counts? And who needs to know what gear their in. As the old saw img goes if you can't find it just grind it!

by full time, do you mean all time all wheel drive? if so, that's a 247 t-case, and not worth the hassle putting it in your xj.

but the 242 should bolt right up, however, there are different spline counts between the earlier and later models.

Yeah I believe its a 247. Damn things so covered in oil from when po blew the motor I cant read the tags. How can you tell the spline count and what do you mean its not worth the time to put in? This vehicle sees minor trail use and heavy winter use, basically whenever I need 4 wheel drive. Thanks

231 is the strongest and best imo.

Ok so what would have to be done to put a 231 in there and what year/model vehicles did they come on? And how do I know what my spline count is? I only paid $400 for the vehicle so I don't want to dump a grand into a tcase for it. Im saving my big money to build up a turbo kia sportage.

Doesn't anyone know how to tell what the spline count is? I've tried google and this forums search and am finding conflicting data tables but no instructions on how to tell short of pulling it and counting. I found a good used atlas tcase with a 23 spline input but need to buy a new rear yoke. Engine blew in the jeep its coming off of so he never heard the driveshaft banging around and cracked the yoke. Or he was too drunk to care

Just count the splines? It's not that hard once you get it pulled make a mark with a sharpie on the first one and carefully count them all.

Count the splines. That is the only way to tell. You understand what the splines are right? The ridges...count them. That is how you find out.

99% of the time, if it has an H.O motor with open cooling system, it will have a 23 spine output.

a non H.O. closed (renix) has a 21 spline output.

but apparently, there were some renix units installed in the first H.O. model year (1991).
but it should be safe to say you have a 23 spline count.
