tailshafts are out... will go onto the tailshgaft and bolts are almost showing enough to put nuts on but we cant shimmy it in more.

Thats why you check these things when you by it... lol
There were 3 different shaft lengths, IIRC
And 2 spline counts, 21 and 23.
I think they can be easily swapped, as long as your old one wasnt damaged.

i recently had to swap the transfer case on my '95 xj and i called my local dealership to verify that my Jeep and the donor jeep came with an identical driveline. Doesn't cost anything and it saved me a lot of time if it had been wrong. The new one bolted right up.....

Make sure he compares the gear cut pitch on both input gears, just because it's 23 spline doesnt mean it is correct. Mixing the pitch will cause problems down the road.
